While you ponder that question, the Moore County Concert Band is proud to announce its’ next concert on Sunday March 3 in the Cardinal Ballroom of The Carolina Hotel starting at 2 p.m.
As always, admission is free.
Does it help to know that the Belle of the Ball will be dancing the Blue Tango and Sandpaper Ballet? Or maybe you can solve the riddle knowing that the trumpet section of the band will be watching The Syncopated Clock while contemplating a Bugler’s Holiday?
Still stumped?
All of these are song titles from the pen of famed composer Leroy Anderson, and the entire concert will be devoted to his music. Additional Anderson compositions will include The Typewriter, Serenata, and The Irish Suite (for Band) including The Irish Washerwoman, The Minstrel Boy, The Rakes of Mallow, and The Girl I left Behind Me.
The Concert Band is delighted to announce that Mr. Kurt Anderson will take the podium as guest conductor for this concert honoring the music of his father. Kurt Anderson, one of four children of Leroy Anderson, is General Manager of classical radio station WMNR Fine Arts Radio in Monroe, Connecticut. He enjoys sharing his love for his father’s music with orchestras, bands and choruses from Connecticut to California.
Recently he has conducted Orchestra New England, the Wallingford Symphony Orchestra, the Golden Eagle Brass Band, Denver, Colorado and the Salina Symphony Orchestra, Kansas.
“I am often asked what my father Leroy Anderson was like. That’s easy to answer. He was like his music. At the dinner table he would share, with great appreciation, simple yet witty word based jokes. His kind of creativity did not earn him a place in the annals of serious music but it accomplished something far more elusive. The music of Leroy Anderson is enjoyed by millions of people, over many generations, throughout the world.”
Leroy Anderson’s music spanned more than six decades. He began his musical career at the age of eleven at the New England Conservatory of Music, and was soon writing and conducting music for the Cambridge High School.
Upon graduation he entered Harvard College and in 1929 was awarded a B.A. magna cum laude in Music.
In 1930 he achieved his master’s degree and started a life long association with the Boston Pops orchestra, conducting that orchestra in the premieres of Promenade and Syncopated Clock.
In 1950 he made his first recording for Decca Records, and in 1952 he received a gold record for one million sales of Blue Tango.
In 1988 Leroy Anderson was posthumously elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 1995 Harvard University named the new band quarters “Anderson Band Center” in honor of Leroy Anderson.
The Moore County Concert Band is an all-amateur band made up of musicians of all ages who love to play music.
The band practices at Sandhills Community College each Monday evening from 6:30-8 p.m.
