Jets Blast Mustangs In Hoops

BY GEORGE LAWTHER: Special to The Pilot

Just about the only thing the Mustang fans had to cheer about Tuesday night when the North Moore basketball teams played their last home games of the season was the ceremony between the two games when the senior athletes and their parents were recognized.

In the first game of the evening, the Mustang girls were defeated by Jordan-Matthews, 66-56. The Jets also prevailed in the nightcap by a score of 55-39. The Yadkin Valley Conference games were played at Robbins.

“As well as we played last Friday,” Mustang coach Cheryl Brewer said following the girls’ game, “that’s how poorly we played tonight.”

The girls almost doubled West Davidson’s output in winning last Friday.

North Moore took the lead, 8-5, midway through the first quarter, but the Jets rallied for eight straight points and led at the end of the first period by a score of 13-8.

The Mustangs came back in the second quarter, however, outscoring Jordan-Matthews 16-11, and the score was tied 24-all at the half.

In the third quarter, the Mustangs turned the ball over seven times, and the Jets took advantage of their opportunities to forge a nine-point lead, 41-32, at the end of the third period.

Jordan-Matthews held on to the lead in the fourth quarter, largely because of the number of personal fouls committed by the Mustangs. Jamy McMillan converted 13 of 14 from the free throw line in the final period, helping the Jets end the game with the 10-point margin.

Alicia Hill was high for North Moore with 18 points. McMillan led all scorers with 21 points, and Kristyn Hurt added 17 for the Jets.

The Mustangs’ record fell to 13-9 for the season, and they are 10-5 in conference play.

In the boys’ game the Jets jumped out to an early lead, holding the Mustangs to two field goals in the first quarter. Jordan-Matthews led at the end of the first period, 17-6.

North Moore rallied in the second quarter, however, cutting the Jets’ lead to three points at the half, 23-20.

Jordan-Matthews increased its lead to six points in the third quarter, and it seemed as if the Mustangs were still very much in the game. The Jets led at the end of the third period by a score of 36-30.

However, in the final period, Jordan-Matthews outscored North Moore 19-9, capitalizing on a few Mustang turnovers, eventually posting the 16-point win.

Jermaine White was high scorer for Jordan-Matthews with 29 points, and Jordan Snipes added 12 for the Jets. Nathan Seawell and Brandon Dowd scored 16 and 14 points, respectively, for North Moore.

With the win, Jordan-Matthews record improved to 14-9 for the season, and it is in second place in the conference with a 12-3 record. North Moore’s record fell to 6-16 for the season (5-10 conference).

Both North Moore teams will play the final game of the regular season at Chatham Central tonight. The girls’ game begins at 6 p.m. with the boys following in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
