Lady Vikes Stop Pats

By Tim Wilkins: Staff Writer

Like champagne left open too long, the Union Pines Vikings followed Tuesday’s record setting 60-59 win over Northwood with a flat, uninspired 53-48 victory over cross-county rival Pinecrest last night in Cameron.

Seemingly nursing a hangover from the previous evening’s celebratory atmosphere in which Heather Hennings broke the North Carolina high school girls’ career record for three-pointers, the Vikings shot just 27 percent from the floor and for the second night in a row pushed head coach Matt Hrbek’s nerves to the snapping point.

Fresh off her shattering of the girls’ record, Hennings fixed her sights on the state boys’ record for treys (275) as she added five more three-pointers to her tally for a game-high 19 points.

With last night’s collection of threes, Hennings now has a career total of 274 and could break the boys’ record in tonight’s regular season-ending home game against Southwestern Randolph.

In addition to Henning’s place in the record books, the 22-0 Vikings will be attempting to compile their second consecutive perfect regular-season and raise their four-year regular-season winning streak to 68.

For the hard luck Patriots, the loss was their ninth in a row and dropped their season record to 7-14 despite killing the Vikings on the boards with a 30-20 rebounding advantage and trading in their usual 40 percent free-throw shooting for a 64-percent night (16-of-25).

The Patriots enjoyed a huge advantage all night long from the charity stripe as the listless, unassertive Vikings hit just five-of-12.

The Patriots were led in scoring by April Brown’s 13 points, and they also got 10 apiece from Nikki Dobbins and Adrena Nicholson.
