Parents and Students Enjoy Reading Club

Fifth-grade students and their parents have been gathering in the media center at Pinehurst Elementary School during the evenings as part of the Family Reading Club.

The club was organized this year by Cathy Wilkison, Pinehurst’s media specialist. She modeled her club after the Family Reading Club former teacher Laura Goodman started in 2001.

During the first meeting, the Newberry-Award-winning title, “A Single Shard,” by Linda Sue Park was discussed.

Parents and students broke into pairs for activities, to work on vocabulary and to make double-bubble maps on characters from the story.

Students acted out parts of the book in “Reader’s Theatre.” In the group discussion, student Rachael Cleary passed around traditional Korean pottery pieces. Pottery was the main focus of the book.
