The Vikings, 6-12 overall, take a 1-0 record in the Tri-County Conference into tonight's 7:30 p.m. match at home against Southeast Guilford.
In Fayetteville Saturday, the Vikings’ Tony Fernandez went 4-0 in the 103-pound class to validate his eighth-place ranking among 3-A wrestlers by NC Mat. The freshman is 13-1 for the season with his only loss coming at the hands of Jack Britt's Jordan Alfaro, the second-ranked grappler in 4-A.
Also enjoying a successful day for the Vikings with 3-1 marks were Mike Gigas (119 pounds), David Boyle (125), Joey Beck (140), Josh Fernandez (160), and Dan King (heavyweight). Jacob Brown ((130) was a late arrival because he was taking his SAT, and went 2-0. Doug Roach (112), Bruce Cole (171) and Joe Wood (215) each went 2-2.
In addition to Tony Fernandez, the Vikings have six other wrestlers with 10 or more wins this season. Their records are Gigas 14-4, Boyle 10-7, Brown 13-4, Beck 11-7, Cole 11-8 and King 13-5.
