Highland Trails
The Highland Trails Women’s Club met at the home of Sylvia Jobe in November.
Sylvia’s husband, Rusty, gave a thought-provoking talk to the club members about the history and beliefs of the Iraqi people. Numerous questions, comments, and a lively discussion followed his talk. Pat Hoffman won the monthly raffle item, a pillow that was sewn and hand-embroidered by Kay Gebhard.
The club’s annual Christmas party will be held at the home of Marie Lipton, 104 Selkirk Trail, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9.
Club members will bring canned goods and toiletry items for the club’s Christmas family. Eileen Price will provide a poinsettia as a raffle item.
Following a brief meeting, the club members will enjoy Christmas carol-singing and refreshments.
Kiwanis Club, Pinehurst
The Kiwanis Club of Pinehurst met Thursday, Nov. 11, at noon at The Pinecrest Inn. The guest speaker was Bill Thompson, president, Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina.
Plans were made by club members for all Christmas activities.
The Annual Food Bank Drive three-week collection of non-perishable foods by the club members ended and was delivered to the Sandhills Food Bank.
Linden Garden Club
The Linden Garden Club of Pinewild held its meeting Nov. 18 at the Pinewild Country Club for a Christmas workshop.
Nona Burrell and Renee Scesa organized the making of holiday ornaments, which included painted glass ornaments, drums, candy canes, gum drop trees, bells, and glass votives.
President Dorothy Sarber called the meeting to order and introduced new members and guests. She thanked Renee and Nona for all their work organizing the Christmas workshop.
Joan Blessing agreed to obtain volunteers to take care of the Pinewild garden. Shirley Chalker, representative to the Sandhills Council of Garden Clubs, thanked members who donated flower pots to Weymouth. She said that hummingbird feeders should be left in place all year, as a different variety of hummingbird will come in the winter.
Janet Waters reported the Club decorated the Pinewild Club house on Nov. 29.
Nona Burrell, chairman of Christmas decorations at Weymouth, reported on the Weymouth workday held Nov. 30. Members can pick up their ornaments at Nona’s house on Dec. 7.
The December Annual Christmas Luncheon meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club. The program will include a talk on the “History of Pinewild” by Carolyn Register. Please call Maureen Fowler to make a registration and send a check to Nona Burrell. Following the luncheon, those interested may visit the Christmas at Weymouth event.
Longleaf Garden Club
The Longleaf Garden Club held its Nov. 18 meeting at Weymouth.
The hostesses were Marie Lipton and Jenny Maloubier.
The business meeting was conducted by the vice president Mary Kilkka in the absence of the president Jean Dilling.
Plans were discussed regarding the club’s decorating the cloak room at Weymouth for the Christmas Open House Dec. 3-4. The theme for the room will be “Xmas Drums and Sugar Plums.”
After the business meeting, there was a workshop on line design arrangements with the ladies making their own arrangements.
The Dec. 16 meeting will be held at the Clubhouse at Belle Meade at 10:30 a.m. There will be a slide program, “The Poinsettia, America’s Christmas Flower.”
This will be followed by a luncheon at Belle Meade.
Woodlake Women
A group of members from Woodlake Women’s Club’s Garden Club went to Windridge Gardens and Statuary located in Southern Pines.
Terri Butterfield, owner, provided an interesting history of the business’ beginning, plus a tour of the property.
“We were amazed at the number of different water gardens and waterfalls from large to small that could be enjoyed even in the smallest of yards,” says a club spokesman. “Some of us made Christmas purchases.”
After lunch at Hyland Hills, the club decided on a return trip in early spring.
