Heritage Crafts Classes Offered in 2004

Moore County Extension and Community Association members will provide Heritage Crafts classes for the public each month in an effort to continue the skills which great grandmothers used.

All the classes will be held at the Moore Agricultural Center, Carthage. For registration details call the Cooperative Extension Service, 947-3188 or go by that office 707 Pinehurst Ave., Carthage, and pick up the 2004 crafts information catalogue which includes details for all the classes. Pre-registration is required.

The first class in 2004 will be pine needle basketry, taught by Carolyn Register and friends, Jan. 26 and 27, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Students will learn to make a small basket during the two days with some homework between classes. Baskets will be made with pine needles and raffia. The class is limited to 20 members and the cost of materials furnished by the teacher is $4.

Feb. 24, 25 and 27, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Cary McLeod will teach chair bottoming. (Students, bring your own chairs and the cane.) Different kinds of caning will be taught in this workshop. The cost of materials furnished by the teacher is $2 and the class limit is 10.

March 24, 9:30-noon, Dolores McCormick from Angier will teach Washi Rice Paper Covered Eggs. Students will learn how to blow an egg out of the shell and cover shell with colored paper. Class limit 10. Cost $4.50

April 28, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Bunny Sinclair and Carolyn Register will teach beginners knitting. Students will learn basics in knitting to make a scarf with Fun Fir. Class limit is 20; the cost of materials provided by teachers is $1.

May 26, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Carol Meszaros and Marge Wachsmuth will teach students to make a small cane basket, which is designed to leave outside the door for messages. Class limit 15. The teachers will furnish the materials for $3.50.

June 23, 9:30 a.m.-noon, Lloyd Everett from Seven Lakes will teach pressed flower and greeting cards. He will teach students and easy way to attach the flowers to the cards with contact paper. The cost will be $3 and the class limit is 20.

July 28, and 29, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Vivian Evans and Nellie Greene will teach pine needle basketry. Students will learn to make a small basket during the two days with some homework between classes. Baskets will be made with pine needles and upholstery thread. The cost will be $3 and the class limit is eight.

Aug. 25, 9:30 a.m.-noon, Dora Ann Maness will teach needlepoint. The students will make quilt square designs, using plastic coasters as the canvas. The materials furnished by the teacher will be $3 and the class limit is 12.

Sept. 22, 9:30 a.m.-noon, Dora Ann Maness will teach candlewicking. A dictionary defines candlewicking as unbleached muslin having small short bunches of wicking tufted to form a design. This needlework was often used for decorative pillows and bed spreads in great-grandmother’s day.

Oct. 27, 9:30 a.m.-noon, Mary Chriscoe will teach ribbon embroidery pillow. Students must have a basic knowledge of embroidery stitches before taking this class. The instructor will furnish supplies for $5.50 and the class limit is eight.

Nov. 17, 9:30 a.m.-noon, Sharing Christmas Ideas. There will be demonstrations by Lee Sherman, Topiary Trees, Louise Blue, Balloon Magnolias, Mary Chriscoe, Quilling Snowflake Ornaments and Carolyn Register recycle old Christmas cards. Everyone is encouraged to bring ideas for decorations or gifts to share with the group. The event will be free with no limit, but pre-registration will be needed.
