Cameron Town Board Approves Annexing Land for Development

By Brian Klimek: Staff Writer

The town of Cameron just got a little bit bigger.

The Cameron Town Board voted unanimously Monday to annex 44.27 acres of land owned by Royce and Jane Edmonds, effective Dec. 31. The tract is on the east side of Dalrymple Road, to the southwest of the town.

The Edmondses plan to build a housing development on the land, which will feature upscale, 1,800 to 2,200 square-foot homes. Royce Edmonds told the board that he believes the housing development will be good for Cameron.

“I think it will be beneficial to the town long after I’m gone,” Edmonds said. “It will be a nice subdivision with a nice entrance.”

Construction will be done in three phases. Edmonds said the subdivision will feature all underground utilities.

Edmonds said the town would be responsible for the streetlights, but that he would be “putting everything else in.” The houses will be constructed on one-acre lots.

Commissioner Michael Thomason asked whether Edmonds would be selling lots with or without houses. Edmonds said there would possibly be some lots sold without houses on them, but that they would be subject to the regulations of the subdivision.

Well Site

In related business, the board voted to consider a resolution for the town to annex a well site that will be used by the subdivision. Action will be taken on the annexation at the Jan. 22 meeting.

Mayor Mack Womble said the annexation and the developments planned by Edmondses will be beneficial to the town.

“I don’t see any reason that this shouldn’t be a benefit with 25 to 30 nice homes,” Womble said. “He and his dad were builders and they do good work so it will be nice.”

The town will be dipping into its general fund to pay $8,628 to Bill’s Well Drilling for work done on well site No. 8 earlier this year.

Womble said the well was one of two worked on by Bill’s Well Drilling. Work for one of the wells (well site No. 7) has already been paid for. Womble said a mix-up between the town and the N.C. Department of Transportation resulted in the nonpayment for the work done at well site No. 8.

“We still have some outstanding debt on No. 8,” Womble said. “We understood that the DOT was going to pay it off, but we had some communication problems and these guys are wanting their money.

Womble said he hopes the town will be able to get reimbursed by the N.C. Department of transportation in January or February.

Both wells were dug to replace ones that were lost because of the U.S. 1 bypass to the east of the town.

Other Business

In other business the board:

n Swore in David Childress as a town commissioner. Commissioner Thomason nominated Childress. Commissioner Jamie Oakley seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous. Commissioner Sandra McKinney was not present. Childress will be completing the unexpired term of former commissioner Tanya Leenheer, who vacated her seat when she moved out of Cameron. The term expires in November 2005.

n Approved a $100 Christmas bonus for the town’s three employees.
