’Stang Girls Defeat Tigers

By George Lawther: Special to The Pilot

After being blown out by Trinity in its opener at the Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational basketball tournament, and then losing a close contest to Jordan-Matthews, 35-32, in the consolation bracket, the North Moore girls’ basketball team won its final game, defeating Randleman by a score of 50-22 on Tuesday night at Asheboro to take seventh place in the tournament.

The Mustangs (4-6 overall) started slowly, as did the Tigers. The two teams combined for a total of 42 turnovers in the first half, exceeding the total number of shots taken by both teams. North Moore held a 17-11 edge at the intermission.

In the second half, however, the Mustangs took control, outscoring Randleman 17-4 in the third period to lead by 18 points, 34-16.

In the fourth quarter, Kristin Brown and Melissa Powers each scored to open the gap to 22 points before leaving the floor as the last starters to exit the game. The Mustang reserves then outscored the Tigers 12-6 in the final minutes.

Brown led the scoring for North Moore with 13 points, while Kelly Goforth contributed 10 points for the Mustangs.
