Patriots Top Vikings; Face Hoke in Title Tilt

Pinecrest and Hoke County were poised to reenact last Friday night’s thriller after the two teams won their Holiday in the Pines junior varsity tournament openers at James Moore Gymnasium Monday afternoon.

The Patriot boys defeated Union Pines 73-48 in the first game, and the Bucks overcame a 15-point deficit at the end of three quarters to beat Lee County 59-54 in the second game.

The final in the four-team event was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The scores for that game and the consolation contest between Union Pines and Lee County will be reported in Friday’s The Pilot.

The Patriots improved to 9-0 by taking command of the game against the Vikings, now 2-7, in the second quarter.

Trailing 40-25 at halftime, the Vikings’ Jeremy Davis with eight points and DeAngelo Griffin with four led a 12-6 run that cut the lead to 46-37.

But the Patriots’ Quentin McKeithan and Tremaine Pride helped lead a response that put the game out of reach.

The Patriots were led in scoring by Tavonte Drakeford and Deon Baynard with 13 points, Pride with 12 and McKeithan with 11.

Davis, 12, Jared Korver and Griffin 10 were the double figure scorers for the Vikings.

Jamelle Leak, who finished with 30 points, was unstoppable inside in the fourth quarter as Hoke overcame a 48-33 Lee County lead.

With just under two minutes to play, the Bucks caught up at 52-52 on a pair of free throws by Kurtis Campbell. Trent Harris, who scored 26, put the Jackets back in front with a pair of free throws.

But Freddie McPhoul tied it with an inside basket and Leak put the Bucks ahead for good with his last basket of the day for a 56-54 lead with 35 seconds left in the game.

Last Friday night at Pinecrest, the Patriots defeated the Bucks in a Mid-Southeastern Conference game by the score of 53-52.
