Fitting Tribute to Philanthropist

That was a lovely editorial tribute to the late David Drexel in Friday’s “Pilot.” He was one of a group of concerned citizens who pulled together the 5th annual Messiah Singalong for the hungry in the Sandhills (Handel On Hunger) on Jan. 5, at The Village Chapel.

They raised $1,000 for Coalition for Human Care, Southern Pines, in that night’s collection. He insisted on personally providing, hosting and serving the entire post-singalong reception for the soloists, orchestra and conductor and invited the singalong participants as well. It is interesting that one of the memorial beneficiaries suggested in his obituary in The Pilot is a charitable organization in Florida called Food for the Poor. Drexel had been impressed by the 4th annual Messiah singalong, the first one that he had attended of the four years that they were held at Robert E. Lee Auditorium.

Alas, he is gone, and so is Moore Vocal Arts Inc. MVA Inc. had founded the event hoping that it would spread wherever people present Messiah. Perhaps the Florida organization will catch the concept and present “Handel On Hunger” in their community.
