Given Library ‘Amnesty Month,’ Martell Wins Book Award

Given Memorial Library Director Alana Fisher announces that December is “amnesty month.”

Fines will be forgiven and overdue books and other items may be returned without charge during the month.

“So if you have any books that should have come back to the library, now is a great time to return them,” said Fisher.

Martell Wins Book Award

“Millie-Christine: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made” received the 2001 Willie Parker Peace History Book Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians at their annual meeting in Hickory on Nov. 3.

The biography of North Carolina’s 19th century conjoined twin sisters, written by Joanne Martell of Belle Meade and published by John F. Blair, was honored as a “valuable contribution to the collection, preservation and perpetuation of North Carolina’s rich history.”

Baggott at UNCG

Julianna Baggott, author of the coming-of-age novel “Girl Talk,” will read from her works Thursday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Sponsored by the MFA Writing Program and The Greensboro Review, the reading will be in Room 217 of the School of Music Building. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and a book signing. Baggott’s books will be available for purchase before and after the reading.

Baggott received her MFA from UNC-G in 1991. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Delaware Division of Arts, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Ragdale Foundation, and Bread Loaf Writers Conference. She has placed poems and short stories in dozens of literary journals including Chelsea, Cream City Review, Poetry, The Greensboro Review, The Southern Review, and Quarterly West, as well as the acclaimed anthology Best American Poetry 2000.

Baggott’s novel, “Girl Talk,” was published by Simon and Schuster’s Pocket Books in February and has since been published by six publishing houses overseas. Southern Illinois University Press published Baggott’s collection of poems, “This Country of Mothers,” in April 2001. Her second novel, “The Miss America Family,” is forthcoming from Pocket Books in February.

UNC-G’s MFA Writing Program is the third oldest in the nation, and this year it celebrates its 35th anniversary. Each year, the program provides outstanding cultural opportunities for the community by bringing established authors to campus.

Spring Workshops

This spring, the N.C. Writers Network and the Carrboro ArtsCenter are co-sponsoring two workshops, “Priming the Pump” and “Writers at Work,” both to be led by creative writing instructor Joyce Allen.

“Priming the Pump” is for new writers who want to explore the basics, as well as more experienced writers who want to generate fresh ideas and jump-start their creativity.

“Writers at Work” provides a supportive and constructive workshop setting for novice and experienced writers who are just beginning or well into a project. The class is designed to help members progress with individual writing projects (short stories, novels, memoirs, or personal essays) and sharpen their craft with the elements that bring a piece of writing to life.
