Owens’ first exposure to visual arts was due to a talented cousin who encouraged him to try creative drawing. The imperatives of earning a living, however, led him to a civil engineering degree and career spent in the grittier regions of the construction industry where reality was usually not associated with artistic effect. In spite of this unproductive environment, he maintained an interest in the visual arts, having the good fortune to be able to continue his exposure thereto.
After retirement, he undertook to become a more active participant, taking courses at the Sandhills Community College and the Artists’ League of the Sandhills with an emphasis on watercolor.
The exhibit features a variety of landscapes, seascapes and florals, subjects gathered in various travels and obtained from both intentioned study and fortuitous whim.
The exhibit will be open to the public from noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday the entire month of September. The Artists League of the Sandhills is located at 129 Exchange Street in Aberdeen.
