Art-a-Thon: Guild Set for Big Project

BY FAYE M. DASEN: Features Editor

Twelve straight hours of creating art may lead to funding for the art program at the Boys and Girls Club of the Sandhills. At least, that’s the hope of members of The Artisans’ Guild (TAG), which is sponsoring an Art-a-Thon on Saturday, Aug. 21 that will benefit that organization.

“We learned that the Boys and Girls Club was offering an art program,” says Joy Hellman of the Joy of Art Studio in Southern Pines. “We decided that we’d like to help in some way, so the idea of this ‘Art-a-Thon’ was born.”

The artists of TAG are collecting pledges, and have committed to 12 continuous hours of creating in the studio for this event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., a table will be available to the public so they can create “coaster” art.

“We are hoping to have one or two of the young artists from the Boys and Girls Club to come as well,” says Hellman.

Hoyt Bynum, director of the Boys and Girls Club, will talk about the organization’s art program at 1 p.m.

“They contacted us with the idea,” says Bynum. “I think it’s a great opportunity for us.”

The Boys and Girls Clubs arts and crafts program enables youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of visual arts, crafts and performing arts.

This year-round program encourages artistic expression among club members ages 6 to 15 through drawing, painting, print making and collages. Club members annually display their arts and crafts talents by hosting an exhibit for parents and the community.

Bynum explains that the budget for that program is approximately, $5,000 to $7,000 per year.

“That is spent on a part-time teacher and supplies,” he says. “It would be nice to be able to have a teacher for 20 hours a week so we could take the program to another level.”

To make a pledge or for more information, call Hellman at 695-7055 or Amy Smith at 947-5304. The studio is located at 130 E. Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines

“Donations are also accepted,” says Hellman.
