When criticizing Pastor Ellis’ sermon, Clare Ruggles certainly showed her agenda, which she proudly gave as her excuse for missing Janet Jackson’s breast, helping John Edwards. When she and Edwards talk of the poverty in a wealthy country that needs to be addressed as a prime social issue, aren’t they saying that the rich people need to give to the poor? It sounds like what I remember Karl Marx saying.
I think Amos would have preferred that we address our social issues by providing opportunities, for those who were born into circumstances less than hers, to find a way to improve themselves. Her message would be the same one that has managed to keep people in poverty and depending on the government for the promised handouts.
In her political sensitivity, she missed the real message of the sermon. The moral decay of this country has progressed to a nearly fatal state. Without an active effort by all of us, who believe that God can help us to overcome any evil, the evil will prevail. If it prevails, this country and the free world will be subservient to those who would like to destroy it.
We must get a higher moral message into our society and our government. This is best done through our religious communities. As long as the religious communities don’t begin to control the governing, our forefathers will nod approvingly from above. “In God we trust.”
