Grants Available to N.C. Youth Groups

State-funded mini-grants are available to youth groups seeking funds for community projects.

A total of $6,500 is available to North Carolina organizations composed of young people, age 13 to 18, who want to implement programs to benefit their peers. The mini-grants, which average $500 each, are administered by the N.C. Youth Advisory Council. The council functions under the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office in the N.C. Department of Administration.

To be eligible for the next round of awards, applications must be received by 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22.

Examples of projects that have received funding include after-school tutorial programs; an alcohol-free graduation celebration; publication of a newsletter; and the purchase of school –supplies for children at a local safe house, computer software to bridge the gap in computer literacy, recreational equipment and orchestral music. Request for cost of food, entertainment, travel and salaries will not qualify for funding.

The State Youth Council will screen applications during its Nov. 14-16 meeting. The Youth Advisory Council will also review applications before grants are awarded.

For applications or information, interested persons can contact Cynthia Giles of the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office, 1319 Mail Service Center, Raleigh 27699-1319 or telephone (919) 733-9296. The application may be downloaded from the Web site at www. doa.state.nc.us/doa/yaio/mini.htm.
