SPORTS BRIEFS: Viking Girls Beat Chargers in Tennis

Union Pines girls’ tennis team defeated visiting Northwood 8-1 in a non-conference match Thursday.

Brooke Kelly picked up two wins, improving to 92-23 in her career at the school. She is now ranked 21st on the school’s all-time win list.

Union Pines is now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Tri-County Conference.

Conference rival Ragsdale will be in town to play the Vikings Monday.

Singles — Julie Blue (UP) defeated Kendall Adams 8-1; Brooke Kelly (UP) def. Whitney Manhard 8-3; Danica Wanko (UP) def. Katie Beverley 8-2; Jamie Snell (UP) def. Taylor Manhard 8-2; Katie Kelly (UP) def. Kat Teryl 8-0; Karyn Devinney (N) def. Kendra Black 8-6.

Doubles — Blue-B.Kelly (UP) def. W. Manhard-Beverley 8-1; Wanko-K.Kelly (UP) def. Adams-T.Manhard 8-0; Snell-Amanda Evans (UP) def. Nicole Mitchell-Samantha Hanner 8-5.

North Moore Tennis

Jordan-Matthews and its state 1-A girls’ tennis singles champion, Helen Mathias, rolled into Robbins Wednesday and left with a convincing 9-0 Yadkin Valley Conference victory.

Mathias defeated Carla Purvis at number-one singles by an 8-0 score.

The Jets are now 6-0 on the season, while the Mustangs dropped to 2-4, all conference matches.

Singles — Helen Mathias (JM) defeated Carla Purvis 8-0; Lindsay Phillips (JM) def. Catilin Forrest 8-2; Amy Stackhouse (JM) def. Holli Cockman 8-0; Rebecca Wrenn (JM) def. Lindsay Melton 8-4; Haley Deaton (JM) def. Sandy Boles 8-0; Lauren Hodley (JM) def. Ashley Hunsucker 8-1.

Doubles — Mathias-Deaton (JM) def. Purvis-Cockman 8-0; Stackhouse-Phillips (JM) def. Melton-Forrest 8-4; Wrenn-Hodley (JM) def. Boles-Hunsucker 8-2.

Patriot Volleyball

The Pinecrest volleyball team will take a 6-0 record into Mid-Southeastern Conference play after defeating Western Harnett 25-17, 25-10, 19-25, 23-25 and 15-11Thursday in Lillington.

The Patriots travel to Scotland County on Tuesday with the junior varsity contest beginning at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6 p.m.

Stephanie Carter led the Patriots with eight kills and seven blocks. Ashley Dickerson also recorded eight kills and Sarah Young had five. Sarah Edwards and Samantha Oldham each contributed 30 assists.

The Patriot junior varsity lost to the Eagles in three games.

North Moore Soccer

The North Moore boys’ soccer team opened the season with a 7-0 victory over Greystone Charter School in a match played at Stanly Community College on Thursday.

The Mustang goals came from Evaristo Lopez 3, Javier Gonzalez 2, Norberto Hernandez and Juan Mendoza. Gonzalez also contributed an assist. Jordan Phillips and Alex Garcia shared the shutout in goal for the victors.

Monday, Greystone travels to North Moore for a return engagement beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Patriot Soccer

In what could be a preview of a middle-round state playoff match in November, Pinecrest, the preseason favorite in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and Terry Sanford, the Two Rivers Conference pick, played to a 1-1 tie Friday night in Fayetteville.

A penalty kick in the first half by the Bulldog’s Will Staten held up until a goal by the Patriots’ David Jannone tied the match with about 15 minutes to play.

Terry Sanford is 2-0-3 while Pinecrest takes a 1-0-1 record into Monday’s home match against Lumberton, another Two Rivers foe. The junior varsity match begins at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.

Pinecrest won the junior varsity game 6-0.
