SPORTS BRIEFS: UP Girls Get League Tennis Win

Union Pines bounced back from its first loss of the girls’ tennis season with a 7-2 win over Tri-County Conference foe Southeast Guilford on Wednesday.

The Vikings, coming off a 7-2 loss to High Point Central in conference action Monday, got two wins from Julie Blue in the away match. The senior’s career record at the school improved to 102-21, good for the 18th spot on the school’s career-win list.

Brooke Kelly and Katie Kelly were also double winners for the Vikings, who improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Union Pines 7, Southeast Guilford 2

Singles — Kristen Hassett (SG) defeated Danica Wanko 10-4; Julie Blue (UP) def. Clara Wetmore 10-0; Brooke Kelly (UP) def. Dena Corthum 10-5; Katie Kelly (UP) def. Laura DeMaria 10-1; Jamie Snell (UP) def. Jenna Whitesell 10-0; Natasha Whetzel (UP) def. Angela Garner 10-3.

Doubles — Blue-B.Kelly (UP) def. Hassett-Wetmore 8-1; Wanko-K.Kelly (UP) def. Katie James-Amanda Hardin 8-0; Katie Mathis-Lauren Marion (SG) def. Amanda Evans-Kendra Black 9-7.

Falcon Volleyball

The O’Neal girls’ varsity volleyball team claimed its first win of the season with a defeat of Fayetteville Academy in an exciting five-game match on Tuesday.

The Falcons took thefinal game 15-12 to get the 3-2 win. O’Neal won the first two games, 25-23 and 26-24, and then watched Fayetteville roar back to take the next two games,25-13 and 25-17, to set up the winner take-all final game.

O’Neal is now 1-2 with the losses coming to strong teams from Kerr-Vance Academy and Richmond Senior teams.

The leading scorers for the Falcons in the match played in Fayetteville were seniors Leslie Faulkner and Lindsay Garner. Faulknercollected eight aces from the service line and added 32 assists. The leading attackers were sophomore Stephanie White with five kills and senior Whitney Cameron with four.

O’Neal coach Brandy Diveley said the entire team played well defensively with a combined digs total of 24.

Cross Country

The North Moore boys’ cross country team finished in second place to Jordan-Matthews High School in a quadrangular meet held at Bear Creek on Tuesday. The Mustangs, with 47 points, were nipped by the Jets with 45 points. Nathan Davis and Randy Harmon were unable to run in the meet for North Moore because of injuries.

Chatham Central finished third with 54 points and West Davidson fourth with 70 in the Yadkin Valley Conference meet.

Jonathan Stewart was the first runner to finish for North Moore in fifth place with a time of 20:57. Clay Gibbons was sixth with a time of 20:58. Rounding out the scoring for the Mustangs were Caleb Steele, who finished 12th with a time of 22:06, Kevin Purvis, 16th with a time of 22:35 and Jeremy Forrest, 21st with a time of 22:55.

The North Moore girls’ team finished in a tie for third place in its competition, which was won by Chatham Central.

First to finish for the girls was Whitney Richardson in fourth place with a time of 27:10. Next was Naomi Miller, eighth with a time of 28:53. Ashley King, Ashley Powers and Morgan Sessoms finished 25th, 26th and 28th, respectively. All-conference runner Claire Monroe was not available because of an injury.

The order in which the teams finished was Chatham Central with 27 points, West Davidson with 43 points, North Moore and Jordan Matthews with 82 points each.

The Mustangs will compete in a dual meet with South Stanly at home this afternoon.

Boys’ Soccer

The Union Pines boys’ soccer team took a 3-0 first half lead and went on to defeat Chatham Central 4-2 at home Tuesday night.

Carson McLean opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a high shot from 25-yards out following a pass from Jordan Mebane. Later in the first period, Troy Hadlock put one in the net off of a Padriag Gibbons assist and Mebane made it 3-0 with a penalty kick.

Six minutes into the second half, Brendon Gibbons finished a pass from McClean making it 4-0 before the visitors scored a pair of goals.

Union Pines took 27 shots to 12 for Chatham Central in evening its record at 1-1. Martin Locklear had five saves in goal for the Vikings. Kris Wahl was in the net in the second half and saved three shots.

Patriots Volleyball

The Pinecrest volleyball team improved to 5-0 by defeating Lee County 20-25, 25-23, 25-17 and 25-15 at home Wednesday evening.

The Yellow Jackets handed the Patriots their first loss this season in the first game and threatened to take the second before the home team took command.

Playing without the injured Ashley Craven (back), starting outside hitter Stephanie Carter moved to the middle blocker position and recorded 18 kills in the match. Sarah Young had eight kills and Carrie Christopher, who took Craven’s place in the starting lineup, added seven.

With the Patriots leading 9-7 in the third game, Young served for four aces in five tries as her team extended its lead to 14-7 and never trailed again in the match.

Pinecrest also won the junior varsity match by scores of 25-13, 15-25 and 15-10.

O’Neal Soccer

The O’Neal boys’ soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with Fayetteville Christian Tuesday.

The Falcons outshot the visitors 13-10. O’Neal missed on a penalty kick midway through the first half. Falcon coach Kyle Kegl said both teams had their chances to score in the private school contest.

“Both teams had lots of opportunities,” the coach said. “They had two shots hit the post and we had two breakaways that we failed to convert. It was a good match.”

Freshmen Soccer

The first-ever boys’ freshmen soccer team at Pinecrest won its opening game by the score of 7-0 over the Scotland junior varsity Wednesday evening at home.

Karl Ainslie scored four times and Jim Hobbs, Win Pratt and Charlie Davis scored one each for the victors.
