Union Pines Girls' Volleyball A comeback bid by Union Pines fell short Tuesday evening at Richmond County in a non-conference girls’ volleyball match. After dropping the first two games by the same score of 15-6, the Vikings won the third game 15-5 as Sally Taylor served the final six points. The Vikings won the fourth 15-12, but lost the deciding game 15-8.
Union Pines led game five 8-6 before the Raiders ran off six points in a row to take control 12-6.
“We had a problem on serve reception, “ Viking coach Valerie Maness said of the late breakdown. “It took the momentum away from us and we never recovered.”
Two of the Viking starters played well in spite of being hampered by injuries.
Setter Sally Taylor played with the right ring finger taped and padded due to a contusion to the pip joint suffered in the North Moore match. She had 16 serving points and 22 assists.
Chastity Oxendine played in only two of the games because of back spasms, but still led the team in kills with ten.
Saturday, the Vikings played in the Davidson College Tournament. They finished 16th out of the 25 teams from North and South Carolina.
“All of the teams in the tournament are good,” Maness said. “It’s always a good experience no matter how you finish.”
The Vikings record in the tournament was 3-5. Two of the wins were over Fayetteville Christian and the other was over Shelby Crest.
Including the tournament, the team’s record is 4-6. | |
