Fairway Notebook


A two-day match play tournament was held July 17-18 at Pinebluff Golf Club.

Golfers competed in three flights. Randy Baker took the overall championship and led Flight A. Mike Montgomery topped Flight B, and Ruth Shuttleworth won Flight C.

During the first round for Flight A, Denny Hassing defeated Gary Crabtree and Randy Baker defeated his brother Rob on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff. Mike Montgomery defeated Bill Stonge in Flight B on the first day. Mike Taylor won over Duffy Siefert; Steve Hinton took Wes Shuttleworth; Bill Damewodd defeated Bill Elkins on the first playoff hole.

Flight C played only one round, with Ruth Shuttleworth defeating Sandy Baker for the win..

In the second round, Flight A winner Baker was pitted against Flight C’s Shuttleworth. Baker won, one up after 18 holes. In Flight B, Montgomery defeated Steve Hinton, four up after 15 holes. Baker and Montgomery then vied for the overall championship. Montgomery was one up on the front 9, but Baker came on strong on the back 9 to close him out.

Steve Hinton, Bill Stonge and Denny Hassing won the Saturday Skins game July 24. Hassing shot all six team birdies and finished with a gross of one-under-par 71. Three of his birdies earned skins. Skins were also scored by Gene McLaughlin on 9, 12 and 18; Bil Elkins on 5; Bentley Jackson on 10; and Mike Taylor on 13.

A "Summer Sizzler" tournament is planned for August. There will be a "Night Glow Ball" game in September . The Club Championship is set for October.

Pinewild: Pam Hunter attacked the 12th hole on the Holly course at Pinewild on July 16. It took a single stroke to sink a hole-in-one. Congratulations.

On July 20 the PWGA played. Freddy Mastandrea and Gladys Schaffernoth tied for low gross at 88; Kay Rednour had low net of 73 in Flight 1. Florance Miller posted 88 for low gross in Flight 2; Linda Critzer took low net with 68. Geri Kanaley had low gross of 97 in Flight 3, with low net going to Alice Wade Stackhouse at 67. Sue Lambert carded 107 for low gross in Flight 4, with Carol Smith posting low net of 73.

Game for the day winners were Judy Connelly, Florance Miller, Carol French and Paula Groseth with 122. Kay Rednour, Joanne Walker, Alice Wade Stackhouse and Cynthia Weller were close behind with 123. Gladys Schaffernoth, Ann Skrie, Jean Dooley and Shirley Randolph took third with 126. Mary Scribner, Linda Critzer, Arvilla Sheron and Jean Clark had 127 for fourth.

Chip-ins were made by Peggy Gest on 7 and 12, Stackhouse on 3, Shirley Ray on 5, Joyce Bramwell on 2, Bev Blandford on 1 and Janet Waters on 16.

The Pinetops played in Southern Pines July 8. Schaffernoth took low net in Flight 3 with a 72. Debbie Ogle had low gross of 95 in Flight 8. Lucille Casey posted low net of 65 in Flight 13. Carol Smith had 103 for low gross in Flight 14.

Pinewild takes second place in the interclub match after the July 13 game at Foxfire.

Whispering Pines: Phil and Shorty Chase with Hal and Hope Dugenske had low gross of 165 in the Sunday Supper Golf group July 18. Low net of 35 went to Bill and Agnes Buckley with Don and Martha Enlow.

Dee and Lee Hancock with George and Peg Carfi had 137, tying Pat and Bonnie Wildman paired with Gordon and Mary Galtere. Rick and Edie Azar and Dan and Judith Wadsworth posted 138 and were tied with Don and Jane Kearns and Don and Eileen Gomber.

Four flights played in the annual MGA Presidents’ Cup match July 22-23. Flight winners played a three-hole event to determine the winner. Ed Brummett defeated Pat Wildman to claim the cup, emblematic of the Men’s Handicap Championship.

Wildman took Flight 1 with a 139. Ron Ostrander was second at 144. Bill Anderson was a stroke behind in third. Larry Lankford posted 144 for fourth and H. Lee Hancock Jr. was fifth at 145.

Ron Derrick led Flight 2 with 143. Thomas Curran was second at 144. Three tied for third at 146: George Pence, Gordon Benmark and Bill Hanscom.

Dick Faber topped flight 3 with 133. Dan Wadsworth was second with 142. Joe Ryan had 145 for third; Anthony Flesch was fourth with 149; Bob Lowry was fifth with 150.

Ed Brummett took first in Flight 4 with 132. Ron Goldberg was second with 138. Wally Cornwell placed third with 142. Three tied at 143 for fourth: John Prizer, Paul Cunningham and Ted Burchill.

Pinehurst: The WGA played a one best ball of four at 90 percent handicap game July 16 on Course No. 1. Lucky Levin, Rosa LoConte, Jeanette Surmonte and Shirley Potter lead the field of 208 golfers with a 57 on a match of cards. Also at 57 were Nancy Clay, Celeste Hensley, Addie Johns, Solita Hawes, second; Nancy Stone, Doris Mornaghine, Ruby Brooks, Nellie DeGroot, third.

On the front 9 Denny Bennett, Loretta Dietrich, Anne Mallgraf and Margaret Peters were tops with 27. Two teams posted 28, and a match of cards determined placement: Pat Greene, Jean McMahon, Bess Gabriel and Dee Bilodeau, second; Mary Kay Johnson, Dav Jadlos, Nancy Cassidy and Shirley Wauters, third.

On the back 9, Jean Sundstrom, Jeanne Anderson, Billy Oxrieder and Helen Ozment were first with 29. A match of cards at 30 gave second to Mary Wardrop, Olive Muiter, Dolores Muller and Mary Radebach, with Jo Rolman, Irene Warthman, Ann Poyner and Kelly Kelly placing third.

The Silver Foils played a better ball of pair tournament July 21. Mary Wardrop and Nellie DeGroot were first with net 62. Phyllis Watson and Norma Cappelleti had a net 66 for second on course No. 1.

The Chippers played Course No. 6 July 22 using the throw out two worst holes at 50 percent handicap format. Bettie Wilson was first followed by Miyuki Kallagis, Florence Walker and Dorinda McNamara. Phyllis Sizemore chipped in on 8.

The MGA played a best ball of four nassau at 80 percent handicap July 21 on course No. 1 with 185 participants. Mick Wallace, Dick Raynour, Gene Dalton and Jack Pretty won the overall match at 16 under. Phil Kalte, Lou Creveling, Chet Reardon and Henry Oster took second at 15 under. Paul Locklear, Phil Manhardt, John Peffley and Paul Prester finished third at 14 under.

Victor Turchick, Andy O’Brien, Al Lyons and Bob Eichelberger won the front 9 in a match of cards at 9 under. Second went to John Baumeister, Rink Rinker, Allen O’Neal and Bill Huber. Terrey Dodson, Chet Holinski, Dick Radebach and Bill Hannah were third with 8 under.

On the back 9, Bob Edelman, Dale Hague, Ed Mack and Dick Waterman took first at 9 under. Carl Sandford, Bob Rolman, Ross Jones and Bill Brewster were second with 8 under. John Dailey, Cal Cialdella, Joe Johnson and Ermie Proctor finished third at 7 under.

The same format was played by 179 golfers July 22 on Course No. 3. Ed Reeves, Gary Butler, Leo Ganster and Henry Witczak were well in front for the overall win at 19 under. John Maniskas, Ron Jasinski, Wayne Steensen and Jerry O’connell were second on a match of cards at 15 under. Third went to Fred Behning, Gordon Smith, Dave Parsons and George Drengler.

On the front 9, Bruno Bednarz, Aldo Barbero, Dave Bidwell and Smitty Smith were first at 9 under. A match of cards at 7 under placed Tom Hamm, Bob Casselberry, Pat Monaghan and Chuck Hoener in second, with Jack Nims, Jack McVey, Bill Kerchof and Jake Overman in third. Norm DeVed, John Ali, Nick Esposito and John Weiss took the back 9 at 8 under. Hal Muskett, Robbie Roberson, Bob White and Walt Maurer were second with 7 under. Third went to Ray Geus, Al Bolton and Harry Palmer on a match of cards at 6 under.

Midland: The MGA played a four-man, two best balls game July 21. Bill McClosky, Dave Smith, Jerry Schuerman and Norm Hawkins were the winners with a net 115. Don Brown, Jerry Kelly, Ken Evans and Nate McClure won the front 9 with a 58. Bill Moore, Bob Alcorn, Jeff Banks and a blind took the back 9 with 55.

It was a great day for birdies: Paul Nestleroth carded one on 8, Tom Delehaunty on 8, Paul Aschmetat on 13, Bob Settzo on 15, Bill Nelson on 14, 15 and 16, McClosky on 3, Kelly on 10 and Alcorn on 2 and 15.

Jim Pittenger posted low gross of 77, with Nestleroth and Hawkins sharing 64 low net.

Bill Robinson, Bill Davis, George Brodrick each won one skin; Carl Arnett took two; Paul Hoffman and Frank Lewis had birdies and skins.

The Sandblasters played a four-man, one best ball game July 20. Bill Moore, Norm Hawkins, George Nash and George Brodrick placed first on a match of cards. Jim Watts, Glenn Brillhart, Andy Boyd and Dick Keyse were second with the same score. Paul Nestleroth, Taylor Carr, Tom Cencer and Carl Leichtnam were third. Wallace Gourley posted low gross of 37, and Boyd had low net of 29. Birdies were carded by Bob Griffith on 1, Bill Robinson on 1, Jim Burnett on 6, and Brodrick on 1.

The ladies played a low net game July 22. Dolores Evans took first in the 18-hole group; Jaye Scheurman and Pat Madeira tied for second; Dorothy Smith was third. Alberta Settzo and Rosella Ciaccio tied for first in the 9-hole game. Helen Carty was second. Chris Cirule and Bernice Leichtnam tied for third. Settzo and Smith had birdies. Settzo, Schuerman and Evans had chip-ins.

Knollwood: The Rainmakers played a "Drop two worst holes at 50 percent handicap" July 19. Alberta Settzo led Flight 1, followed by Bette Randolph and Beverly Braunscheidel; Randolph birdied 1. Helen Carty was tops in Flight 2, followed by Jean Carver and Marion Aschmetat. Caroline Cranson was first in Flight 3, followed by Helen Mannion and Georgia Paulette.

The Rainmakers played a blind holes at 50 percent handicap July 26. In Flight 1, Dorothy Smith was first, followed by Bette Randolph, second, and Penny Higgins, third. Betty Boyd topped Flight 2 ,with Hollie Wishart second and Bobby Benardi third. Higgins birdied 1; Sadie Bothwell chipped in on 6.

Seven Lakes: The 18-hole women golfers played a "TOE" game July 20. Lois Newsham won Flight 1; Grae Starwald and Nancy Burgoon tied for second; Shirley Jaeger was fourth. Carole Barnard topped Flight 2. Rudi Jones and Carol Thompson tied for second. Ann Pacella and Dot Sparke tied for third. Rosemary Campbell led Flight 3. Lois Moore was second; Lorraine Connor took third; Jane Arnold was fourth.

The 9-hole group hosted a "Friendship Day" July 21 with the Beaconettes from Beacon Ridge. The winners, on a match of cards, were Lib Monroe, Phyllis Dorward and Patsy Worthy of Seven Lakes, with Ruth Shannon of Beacon Ridge. Second place went to Kay Houlihan, Sandy Zimmer, Nancy Wilson from Seven Lakes, and Kathleen Deignan from Beacon Ridge. Chris Hendershot, Eleanor McKenna, Donna Parsons of Seven Lakes and Carole Skau of Beacon Ridge were third.

Longest putt on 18 went to Barbara True of the Beaconettes and Ellen Smith of Seven Lakes. Burgoon was closest to the flag on 10.

The 9 hole men’s league played July 21. Wayne Fry, Warren Myer, Jack Houlihan and George Parr placed first. Ed Ryan, Bud Shaver, Joe Anderson and Tom Hendershott were second. Burt Montague, Jim Bach, Herb Kelly and Val Shellenbarger placed third. Hendershott was closest to the pin on 7.

Whispering Woods: The ladies played a low gross/low net game July 20. Marti Libbey won low gross in Flight 1 and Tina Burns took low net. Shirley Haag posted low gross in Flight 2, with Audrey Martin taking low net.

Longleaf: Eagles have landed!

On July 7 Paul Brodict eagled 1 while playing with Jesse Wood, Don Lynn and Tim Sullivan.

A week later, Carol Crook did the same on the same hole from 138 yards with a 5 iron. She was playing with Joan Bell and Gloria Beck.

Beacon Ridge: Clarice Moreau, LaVonne Hurd and Ann Parsons were the Flight 1 winners in the July 20 game. Marlene Price, Marianne Foley and Pal Allan led Flight 2. Lanny Eisenberger, Jeanne Helmsetter and Marilyn Hoffman were winners in Flight 3.

The MGA played a Stableford match July 21. Pete Chase, Mel Keiffer, Howard Moreau and Tom Silk were the winners. Jim Farrell, Ken Light, Jim Owen and Bob Mitchell were second. Bruce Alligood, Colin Swain, Curt Wilson and Bill Pomplun placed third.

Woodlake: Billie Washburn claimed the Eagles’ Cup for the third year in a row. Her partner this year was Dot Dube.

At the end of the first week, the twosome were in second place, five points off the lead after a Captain’s Choice.

After a washed-out second week, tournament Director Be Schilling opted for a 9-hole modified Scotch format. Washington and Dube squeaked through to win. Lois Volmer and Kay Ford tied with Rosemary Maurath and Schilling.

Maurath and Schilling had the best round of the day, posting 63.5.

Foxfire: The ladies played a Superball tournament July 21 on the Red Fox course. Sally Micka and Georgia Adams were the winners. Judy Smith and Bertha Christman tied with Flo LaShomb and Juanita McCleney.

The July 20 Twilight Tournament was played on the Grey Fox course. Pat McKeon and Frank Zarod with Paul and Jan Dowidchuk were first. Gerry and Flo LaShomb with Dick and Jaunita McCleney were second.

Joe and Lucille Cardelle emerged as the winners of the Mixed Scotch tournament, played monthly. They were one of two undefeated pairs. The Cardelles defeated Bob and Grace Shea for the win.

The men played an individual net match July 19. Blair Hildebrand shot a 69 for the win. Wally Peckitt was second at 70, followed by George Galloway and Jim Rankin with 71; and Jim Wise, Don Smith, Gerry LaShomb and Skip Beggs, all at 72. In a best ball of two match July 22, Carl Bernet and Wilson Ashley led with 62. Bill Facey and John Dziminowicz were second with 63. Ed Micka and Blair Hildebrand were third with 65.

When the Golden Tee’rs played, Al Crisp was the low net winner with a 32, tied with Bob Dresher. Dresher had low putts.

Southern Pines: The first of 10 couples’ matches was held July 25. In Flight 1, John and Jackie Hall defeated Frank and Carol Morris; Paul and Frankie Lower won over Dick and Penny Burke; George and Mickey Wirtz led over Ed and Pat Bryan.

In Flight 2, Bill and Helen Sabolsky won over Margaret Storey and Bob Schueller; George and Muriel Thonet bested Don and Ann Woodfield; Sammy and Billie Joyce Hill defeated Lonnie and Florence Taylor; Jack and Charlotte Donovan tied with Gerry and Angel Bell.

The Saboloskys won the low team best ball.
