The event takes place on Sunday, April 30, at 4 p.m. at the Lee Auditorium of Pinecrest High School.
Accompanied by full orchestra, the Choral Society members will perform several favorite and familiar opera choruses. Among them is the Verdi work from his opera, Nabucco, that was recently heard at the Winter Olympics closing ceremony — “The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.”
Singing the piece in the original Italian, the Choral Society will perform other operatic choruses in French and German as well. The Broadway half of the program includes a tribute to Richard Rodgers and a medley of Irving Berlin tunes.
The 100-voice Choral Society originated in an evening class at Sandhills Community College in 1975 with just eighteen singers. Presently it is under the direction of Anne Dorsey.
A prominent teacher of choral music in the North Carolina public school system, Dorsey is a member of the American Choral Directors association, the Music Educators National Conference and the North Carolina Music Educators Association.
Tickets for the concert are $15 and may be obtained at the Village Deli in Pinehurst, at The Country Book Shop or at the Arts Council at the Campbell House in Southern Pines, or by calling 295-2794.
