Pinehurst Rotary Presents Awards
On Tuesday, March 28, the Pinehurst Rotary Club held its annual “Ethics and Values” awards dinner at the new culinary facility at Sandhills Community College’s Little Hall. Established nine years ago by the late Rev. Bill Laudermilk, the dinner has honored a citizen of the Sandhills that, by his everyday actions, epitomized the spirit of the Rotary “Four Way Test.” The four-way test is a simple statement of the values of Rotary: Is it the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
The speaker for the evening was “Buddy” Sprong who used the test as a basis for an insightful talk on ethics and values.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the H. Edward Poyser Citizen of the Year Award to Joann Hanley of Pinehurst in recognition of her extraordinary dedication to volunteer service in the community and her work with Firsthealth Hospice.
To signify her achievement, Rotary District 7690 Governor Phil Morris presented Joann with a Paul Harris Fellowship. The award and medal are named for the Chicago businessman who founded Rotary one hundred years ago.
In addition to the Citizen of the Year award, the club presents scholarships to students at Sandhills Community College. The students, selected by the faculty, are then interviewed by members of the Pinehurst Rotary to determine the recipient of the principal award. This year’s recipients are Rita Buie, Ray Thompson, Shondra Hayes, Billy McRae and Angela Knipping.
