Southern Middle School’s Technology students won first place at the North Carolina Department of Transportation Model Bridge Building Competition that was held at Montgomery Community College March 3.
Students designed, constructed and tested several bridge designs before competition. A team of six students Garrett Berk, Michelle Barton, Michael Warren, Tyler Strother, Megan Fruchte and Amanda Callister and two coaches, Rae Irvine and Ron Currie, successfully placed first in the regional competition.
The team was required to select a design, draw plans, write an essay on the history and design of bridge building and deliver an oral presentation describing the design and rationale behind their bridge design.
On the day of the contest the bridge was tested for its efficiency, and the student team consisting of sixth- and seventh- graders presented their report using visual guides relating to the team’s bridge design.
The team will advance to the state level, and on April 7, they will give a multi-media presentation along with an essay, drawing and a model of the team’s bridge in competition in Raleigh.
The team has an opportunity to win up to a $650 cash prize and will compete against three other schools in the state.
