Golf Bag: Owings Memorial May 13-14

BY HOWARD WARD: Golf Writer

The annual Keep Moore County Beautiful Marge Owings Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club May 13 and 14.

The 18-hole captain’s choice event helps to fund Keep Moore County Beautiful, Inc., a nonprofit environmental organization.

The popularity of the tournament necessitates three separate events, with shotgun starts being held at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

The entry fee is $125 per person, which includes lunch, on-course beverages and snacks, and an Owings Memorial Gift Packet that includes four complimentary green fees at Mid Pine for every golfer.

Prizes will be awarded and a raffle and silent auction will be held each day. Donations are tax deductible.

For information and entry forms, contact Joan Neal, executive director of Keep Moore County Beautiful, at 947-3478.

Historic Win: Katja Damman of Pinehurst made history on The Amateur Golf Tour last weekend when she won Flight A in the event held at Asheboro Country Club.

Damman became the first woman to win the flight in the existence of the tour, shooting a 79 to tie for first place with Gerry Farmer of Greensboro and edging him in a scorecard playoff.

“I’m pretty excited,” Damman said. “This is my first victory in any golf tournament anywhere.”

Damman played from the white tees, giving her a total of only 264 yards advantage against the men in Flight A.

Gene Queen of Advance won the Championship Flight in a card playoff after he and Steve Richard of Apex had tied with 75s. It was the first win for Queen, a rookie on the tour.

“The newcomers are certainly making their mark on the tour this season,” said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. “Also the fact that a woman has enjoyed some significant success underscores the fact that we are truly open to any and all amateur golfers who want a fair challenge competing at their respective skill level.”

Senior Tour: Craig Galbrieth overcame a straying driver to shoot a 2-under-par 70 and win the Championship Flight of the Harris Teeter Senior Golf Tour event held at Bryan Park’s Champions Course in Greensboro.

Chuck Wunsch of Pinehurst took second place with a 73.

Steve Cummings of Reidsville and Randy McGinnis of Graham tied for first in Flight A at 76, with Cummings winning a card playoff. William Hiner of Pinehurst was third with 77.

“A bunch of new members are really starting off well this season,” said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. “That’s part of the reason why we drew 96 guys today. Every new member sees that they have a chance to be competitive out here, no matter what their handicap.”

For information on playing in a Harris Teeter Senior Tour event, open to any amateur golfer over age 50, contact Hallenbeck at (919) 499-9749, or e-mail at behgolf@aol.com.

Tarheel Tour: Alex Hamilton of Aiken, S.C., a Tarheel Tour rookie, captured his first pro title in the Rock Hill (S.C.) Open.

Hamilton, who turned pro last fall after an All-American career at the University of South Carolina, began the final round one shot behind leader David Sanchez of Pinehurst. Hamilton shot 34 on the front nine, but suffered a daunting double bogey on the par-3 12th hole.

“I just hit a bad bunker shot and it got worse from there,” he said.

The hiccup seemed to light a fire in Hamilton as he birdied the par-5 13th with a wedge shot to three feet. He then made birdies on 14, 16, 17 and 18 for a back-nine 33 and a 67 that nipped a charging Tim Pemberton of Charlottesville, Va., by a shot to earn the $11,000 first-place check.

Pemberton, who collected $6,000 for his runner-up finish, carded eight birdies in his final-round 67.

Tying for third at 5-under-par 139 were Matt Cannon, Sanchez, and former Clemson All-American Gregg Jones. They earned $3,200 each.

Sixth place was shared by Charleston’s Jay McLuen, Greensboro’s Ryan Gioffre, and William McGirt, Greenville,S.C., who earned $2,008.33 each.

Senior Open: PGA Professional Steve Forrest of Clemmons won the 2006 E-Z-GO Old North State Senior Open by three strokes at the Old North State Club.

Forrest, who shared the lead after an opening round 71, finished with a 69 for a 140 that was three shots better than runners-up Burt Baine of Weddington and amateur Brodie Baker of Bermuda Run.

Jim Streckfus of Pinebluff was 11th with 147, while Spike Smith of Pinehurst was a stroke back at 148. Hal Dugenske of Whispering Pines shot 153, and Ken Eichele of Pinehurst was at 155. Herb Conway and Charles Daley of Whispering Pines tied at 158. William Hiner of Pinehurst was at 162, with Dick Wilson of Whispering Pines at 165.
