S.P. Recreation Honors Volunteers

The Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department paid tribute to all of its volunteers with an appreciation dinner and an awards presentation.

The buffet dinner also featured entertainment by participants in the Senior Division line dancing class.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to our volunteers,” said David White, director of the town’s recreation and parks, and buildings and grounds departments. “Volunteers turn good programs, special events and athletic leagues into great programs, special events and athletic leagues. Volunteers help beautify the town by planting approximately 3,000 Impatiens each spring, picking up litter along roadways throughout the year, and checking holiday wreath decorations each winter.”

Outstanding volunteer recognition was awarded to individuals who have freely and enthusiastically given of their time and talent in service to the department and whose contribution has significantly enhanced the success of the program, according to a news release.

Special citation awards were presented to individuals or organizations who have rendered extra-special service to help advance the recreation and parks field by sponsoring a program, developing a new program and contributing to beautification efforts.

Outstanding volunteer recognition was awarded to Shirley and Bill Morrison of the Senior Division. They have volunteered as receptionists at Douglass Community Center.

“They also volunteer to do special projects, craft club and many other tasks required at DCC and other event locations,” said Senior Coordinator Pam Smith.

Kim Matthews and Jennifer Currie were recognized by Program Coordinator Sue Gillis for their outstanding contribution as coaches for cheerleading squads.

“Kim and Jennifer have brought football and basketball cheerleading to a higher level as they emphasize fun and camaraderie within their squads over the past three years,” Gillis said.

Michelle Casper, a high school student and Kinder Camp volunteer, was also recognized for her creative spirit in leading pre-schoolers in fun activities that include a marching band with oatmeal container drums, toilet paper tube maracas, paper plate tambourines, and many more fun activities for the past two summers.

Barry and Pam Hill also accepted recognition for coaching indoor soccer and various sports. Athletic Coordinator Robert Reeve commented on their devotion to athletics.

Numerous special citation awards were presented. Pinecrest High School horticulture students were honored for their time and effort during the years for helping with spring planting day, as well as the Southern Pines Garden Club for its continued financial support in helping beautification projects.

The Moore County Home Builders Association was recognized for quickly stepping forward in the aftermath of a tornado last October that devastated Memorial Park during football season. This group came together to help rebuild the dugouts and have been instrumental in making plans for rebuilding other facilities within the park that were damaged, the news release said.

The American Red Cross-Moore County Chapter, Habitat for Humanity of Moore County and Moore Housing Partnership were also honored by Mayor Frank Quis for their dedicated efforts in helping rebuild Southern Pines in the wake of the tornado.

These groups came together to help residents in need. These organizations provided the many volunteers and staff with meals during the aftermath and organized the labor and materials for repairing homes damaged by the tornado and whose owners lack insurance.
