A Birdie, No Bogeys

Birdie: By Lynn Thompson, the top bookworm at the Southern Pines Public Library, for organizing the third annual Poetry Bowl featuring English professors from Pinecrest High School, O’Neal’s upper school and Southern Middle.

A capacity — and sometimes raucous — crowd packed the library to see these literary luminaries match wits. After a pitched battle, the O’Neal Falcons edged out the two-time defending champs from Pinecrest. Southern Middle competed well and stayed within striking distance despite being one player short.
