After opening its Yadkin Valley Conference season with two overtime contests, one that ended in a tie with South Davidson and another that ended in a tough loss to Jordan-Matthews, the Mustangs made sure that they took care of things in regulation time at Robbins Monday in beating conference foe South Stanly 3-1.
After an uneventful first 20 minutes, the Mustangs finally struck paydirt first.
At that point, Mustang Kayla Daziel found Whitney Richardson in the box with a small chip over the South Stanly defenders. Richardson hit a rocket that hit the cross bar and sailed into the goalie’s face. The ball ricocheted into the net for the first goal of the game. The rest of the first half continued without any real scoring opportunities.
The second half started with South Stanly putting pressure on the North Moore goal. South Stanly scored on an indirect kick 10 minutes into the second half. It was beginning to look like another overtime situation with 12 minutes left in the game.
North Moore coach James Horwath made the decision to switch the Mustangs defense from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-3.
Within two minutes North Moore was in the South Stanly goal area, with Richardson passing the ball into the Rebels’ goal area. A South Stanly defender deflected the pass into her own goal, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
North Moore scored again in four minutes, as Daziel found Hannah Thomas in the box. Hannah placed enough power on the shot to have it squeeze through the goalkeeper’s hands and into the South Stanly goal. North Moore is now 2-3-4 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
North Moore’s game with Albemarle has been moved from today to May 5.
North Moore’s game with West Davidson was moved from April 18 to April 21.
