 Birdies and Bogeys
Birdie: By Retired U.S. Brig. Gen. Ted Mataxis, a former longtime resident who’s children still live here in the Sandhills, for having a street named after him in the French town of Oeting. As a young soldier during World War II, Mataxis led the charge to liberate this strategically important Saar River town. Congrats, sir.
Bogey: By Rep. Jim Black, who is the speaker of the N.C. House, for leading the crusade to start a state-sponsored scam euphemistically called “the education lottery.” Black’s colleagues would lock up any North Carolinian that perpetrated a numbers game like this in the private sector. Yet it’s somehow legitimate public policy because these ill-gotten gains go to support the public schools. What’s next, the education prostitution tax?
Birdie: By Mother Nature, for sending unusually gusty winds and heavy rains late last week to dampen the impact of the plume of pollen that has encased the Sandhills for the last couple weeks. The putrid green pine pollen seemed mercifully lighter until it really shook loose on Saturday. Thanks for cutting us some slack, Mother Nature, and letting us get on with your glorious spring. |
