With the attempt to intervene with Terri Schiavo and, now, in all of our lives, as the radical Republican machine seeks to end any balance of power and to quiet all dissenting voices, as they use the touted “nuclear option” to overturn the senators’ 200-year-old right to extend debate via the filibuster, our nation faces the danger of a few gaining dictatorial power over the rest of us.
The “American dream” many generations of Americans have envisioned will end once the filibuster is circumvented and the Supreme Court is in the hands of the extremists who form the core of the Republican leadership — paid for and owned by national and international corporations who want no interference with their right to gouge U.S. citizens with outrageous prices for medicines, or with their right to utilize enslaved workers in the developing world, as they keep us consuming expendables at an exhaustive rate.
When all bodies of our government come under the absolute power of the elite who are pushing the Republican party toward dictatorial powers in place of the democratic process of seeking consensus, we — conservative, moderate, progressive and liberal — will forever lose our voice and freedom that have enabled the affluence and influence we have enjoyed as a nation.
Corporate ownership of the members of both houses and both political parties is profoundly eroding our democratic system and bringing to an end the values and the understandings which have made our way of life unique in human history.
Will we wake up in time?
