Patriotic Pops At Pinecrest

The Pinecrest Choirs Pops Concert 2004 is coming to the Robert E. Lee Auditorium May 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. This year’s concert is conducted by Torin Wright and assisted by UNCP student teacher Christopher Hansen.

Each year the Pinecrest Choirs close the concert season with a thematic concert that celebrates a certain style of music or culture. This year’s concert is entitled “Songs of America” and is a two act, highly paced choreographed and staged medley of America’s most beloved tunes from the music of our nation’s beginning to the music of today.

The concert will take a journey through some of the most significant musical contributions in American history. The 100 voice choir will feature songs of the past, songs of the south, songs of our homeland, songs of Broadway, movies, Disney, country and much more.

“Those in attendance will experience the music that made our country great and take pride of who we are as Americans,” said Wright. “In a 90-minute choral revue featuring 39 of Pinecrest’s best soloists, the choirs will celebrate this remarkable musical asset of ours by honoring our very own music and even our own people.”

In the patriotic section of the concert, all present American veterans and active soldiers will have the chance to stand and be recognized as a color guard unit from each military branch presents their branch flag.

At the culmination of the show during the presentation of “America the Beautiful,” Sgt. Major John Mims, a decorated world war two veteran who earned a Purple Heart in the Death March of Bataan will be recognized along side his granddaughter, Pinecrest senior Casey Mims. The patriotic section is intended to bring remembrance to those who have served and are currently serving our country’s military.

To further enhance the evening, the audience can look forward to enjoying professional sound and lights and hearing the same caliber orchestra that they have grown accustomed to when seeing the Pinecrest Choirs. The orchestra is a community based/semi-professional/professional group that has been working in collaboration with the Pinecrest Choirs for the past eight years.

Amanda Harrison and Claire Fields assisted in the choreography of this year’s concert.

General admission to an individual performance of the Pops Concert is $8, seniors and students are $7 and Moore County School employees will be admitted free of charge. Anyone who wishes to attend both performances can buy a two-night ticket for $10.

Tickets will be available at Sandhills Video in Aberdeen the week of the performance.
