ARTICLES OF FAITH: Beaver Creek Baptist Holds Spring Revival and Prayer Walk

Beaver Creek Baptist Church at 2280 Nicholson Rd., Cameron will have a spring revival and prayer walk on Monday, April 26 through Wednesday, April 28.

The guest speaker will be the Rev. Russell Blackmon. Service starts at 7 p.m. with a short prayer walk in the neighborhood and then the revival service in the Family Life Center.

“Come early on Wednesday to enjoy ‘Breakfast For Dinner,’” said a spokesman. Serving starts at 6 p.m. followed by the conclusion of the revival. The nursery will be open.

Gospel Singing

The Comptons will be featured Sunday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 632 McCrimmon Rd., Carthage. For information, call 947-4736 or 245-7000.

Cypress Church

On Sunday May 2, Cypress Presbyterian Church will celebrate Cypress Memorial Sunday. There will be an outdoor service at 7:30 a.m. in the church cemetery, followed by a breakfast at 8:15 in the fellowship hall.

Terry Myers will play bagpipe music and his wife Diane will accompany him as the drummer.. Barbara McCormick, a member who grew up in Cypress will bring remarks about the history and heritage of the church. A roll call of the names of all persons buried in the cemetery during the year 2003 will be read at the 11 a.m. worship service, and a special prayer will be offered by Elder Walter Smith

This year’s speaker is the Reverend William Stewart who was the first full time pastor of Cypress Presbyterian Church. He left Cypress in 1991 to become the executive presbyter of Memphis Presbytery, from which he retired from the full time ministry in 1995. He is currently serving the Lakeview and Union Presbyterian Churches of our area part time. At the 7:30 a.m. service the Rev. Stewart’s homily will be titled “The Shepherd Never Forgets” and at the 11 a.m. worship service his sermon will be “Joy.”

The purpose of Cypress Memorial Sunday is to recognize and honor the members of this church who over the years, since its founding in 1823, have made a significant contribution to this church, the community, and our nation.

“We have a unique heritage here at Cypress, and Cypress Memorial Sunday is our way of remembering and celebrating the faith of those who have gone before us, and attempting to instill their trust and love into the lives and hearts of our children,” said a spokesman.

Cypress Presbyterian Church is located in the Lobelia community, on Cypress Church Road - 6 miles east of Vass. Richard D. Rodda is the minister of Cypress.

“The public is invited to all these services,” said the spokesman.

Church Anniversary

Friendship Grove Freewill Baptist Church, located Hwy 401 N, will be celebrating its 96th Annual Church Anniversary April 25. Service will begin at 9:45 a.m. with Sunday School, 11 a.m. morning worship and at 3 p.m. Elder Kent McMillian and Fryes Chapel Freewill Baptist Church congregation of Vass, North Carolina will be the special guests.

Conference

The United American Freewill Baptist Denomination, of the Cape Fear Conference “Bs“ Division Under the Leadership of Presiding Bishop, Robert L. Douglas, and Vice Bishop Dr. David H. Bell will be hosting its annual Mid-Year Conference, May 22, beginning at 10 a.m.

All members and churches of the CFC”B” are asked to be in attendance. The event will be held at The R.L. Douglas Conference “B” Headquarters Located 10225 Hwy 401 N., Raeford.

Outreach Day

The Southern Pines Police Department and Mt. Olive Holy Bible Church of God plan a community outreach day on Saturday, May 1.

The event will take place at Mt. Olive Church, 680 South Gaines St., Southern Pines during the day.

The event is also an opportunity to see what resources the police department and public safety offices bring to a community. Planned for May 1 are blood pressure checks, fire safety education and child “Identakits.” Also, staff will be on hand to talk about free gun locks, the community watch program and will offer home security surveys. The K-9 unit will also offer a demonstration throughout the day.

Refreshments are planned.

Adult Academy

The Adult Academy of Religious Studies will conduct a four session study of the controversial book, “A New Christianity for a New World” written by the equally controversial bishop of the Episcopal Church, John Shelby Spong. The sub-title of the book is “Why Traditional Faith Is Dying & How a New Faith Is Being Born.”

The class will meet in the kitchen of the Activity Center of the West End Presbyterian Church for four consecutive Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. beginning April 28 and concluding on May 19. Don Welch and Dudley Crawford will co-teach the course and enrollment will be limited to 25 persons. The fee for the course is $20 per person and includes the price of the book.

“This course is not for the ‘faint of heart’; those who are afraid to explore new and sometimes radical ideas with open minds,” says Don Welch, the director of the Academy. “We will discuss such topics as ‘The Death of Theism,’ ‘Changing the Basic Christian Myth,’ ‘The Irrelevance of Original Sin and Atonement’ and ‘Jesus beyond Incarnation.’”

Participants should read as much of the book as possible before the first session. Books and registration forms are available in the church office or you may register by calling the church office at 673-4341 or emailing adultacademy@estendpres.org.

CROP Walk Set

The 21st annual Sandhills Area CROP Walk will be held on Sunday, April 25 at First Baptist Church in Southern Pines. The walk this year is once again sponsored by the Sandhills Fellowship of Churches. Registration for the CROP Walk will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the Walk itself will start at 3 p.m. The CROP Walk is a three-mile route through Southern Pines with a rest stop in front of the Coalition for Human Care.

The CROP Walk is a nationwide ecumenical fundraiser to fight hunger locally and internationally. Some 2,000 communities around the country will sponsor similar CROP Walks this year. Twenty-five percent of all funds raised will stay here in the Sandhills area to be distributed to local hunger relief agencies such as the Coalition for Human Care and the Food Bank. The other 75 percent is distributed to 19 different agencies working to end hunger around the world. Church World Service, a ministry of the National Council of Churches, receives the funds and handles the distribution.

“We invite all Sandhills area churches to participate in this year’s CROP Walk,” said the Rev. Erin Martin. “Our goal is to have 25 participating churches and organizations, 400 walkers, and $25,000 in funds. We are excited about the CROP Walk as a way to express our unity among Christians in the area, as well as a way to actively contribute to the hunger needs in our local community.”

The fourth annual Diabetes Gospel Music Sing will be held Saturday, May 1 at the Laurel Hill Auditorium.

There will be a hotdog supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with singing starting at 6 p.m.

Featured groups include The Skylight Boys, Homeward Bound, The Hill Family and more.

Admission is free, but a love offering will be received.

Greater Glory Pentecostal Deliverance Ministry will hold its annual Youth Convention Thursday, April 22 through Sunday, April 25. Services are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Featured will be 15-year-old Minister Yon Hines (Everlasting Delivery PD Church, Southern Pines), 14-year-old Minster Shameka Orr (Worship & Praise Ministries, Atlanta, Ga.) and Minister Timothy Jones (Triumph Christian Center, Hamlet0>

Men’s Empowerment

Higher Dimensions Worship Center will have a Men’s Empowerment Worship Service on Sunday, April 25, at 4 p.m. The guest speaker will be Pastor Gaston Battle, Charity Fellowship Ministries, Gastonia. Spring Revival

Southside Missionary Baptist Church will hold its spring revival on Monday, April 26 through Friday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m.

The Rev. Eugene Ussery will be the guest speaker. On Sunday, May 2, a dinner will follow the worship service.

The church is located three miles from Aberdeen on Hwy. 15-501 South.

Homecoming

The Elise Church/Elise Academy Homecoming will be held on April 25 at the Elise Presbyterian Church, Robbins. Worship service is at 11 a.m. A Pot Luck Dinner will follow at noon. Bring a dish to share.

Friendship Day

Church Women of Moore County will celebrate May Friendship Day.

This year’s theme is “In Faith, Women Shape the Future through Friendship.” The event will be at Community Presbyterian Church, 125 Everette Rd., Pinehurst, at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 7. Luncheon will follow.

“Bring personal toiletries to be distributed to Friend to Friend and SIHN,” said a spokesman.

Bible Study

Community Bible Study is an international organization. Its daytime class is open to all women who are interested in learning more about the Bible. This non-denominational study meets on Tuesday mornings from 9:15 to 11:15 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Southern Pines.

The 2004/2005 class goes from September to May. Registration for next year is starting now. There are classes for small children with crafts and Bible stories, and a nursery for babies.

There is a small charge to cover the materials, with scholarships for those who cannot afford the fee. Call Barbara Ewing at 910-215-8949.

Conference

Christian Mission Center in Carthage will sponsor a “Women Survivors’ Conference on Saturday, April 17 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., including a matinee at 6 p.m. and on Sunday, April 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sermon Series

Joseph Garlington said, “Jesus has some strange kids.”

This strangeness is seen in the kind of disciplined life to which followers of Christ are called. In this new sermon series, beginning the Sunday after Easter at High Falls and Fair Promise UMC, we will take a look at some of the practices of the Christian life, and consider how this call to “strangeness” can lead us to a life filled with purpose and meaning.

The Fresh Start Church will meet at the McDonald Building on Hwy 24/27 in Carthage. Fellowship and refreshments will begin at 9:30 a.m. and worship will start at 10 a.m.

Pineywood Baptist

Pineywood Baptist Church will hold revival through Friday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. The guest speaker is the Rev. Jerry Yarboro of Shady Grove Baptist.

Spring Festival

Liberty Church plans a spring festival on Saturday, April 24 from noon to 4 p.m. at the church, 1801 Quewiffle Rd., Aberdeen.

No admission will be charged.

Activities include face painting, balloon animal sculpture, fire truck rides and tours, an air castle and much more. Organizers also plan to have food on hand including hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, potato salad, chips, deserts and drinks.

A gospel singing will start at noon.

Red Hill Baptist Church will host the Griffin Singers of Broadway, the New View All Stars of Carthage and the duo of Frye & Pattishaw on Sunday, May 2 at 3 p.m.

All proceeds will go to benefit the church’s scholarship fund.

St. John UCOG

On Saturday, April 17 at 6 p.m. St. John United Church of God in Carthage will host a musical program sponsored by Gary Brown.

On Sunday, April 18 at 4 p.m. the church will have a Men’s Day program. The Rev. Paul McNeil of Washington Park Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville is the speaker.

Family & Friends Day

Body of Christ Outreach Ministry on Lemon Springs Road will have its Family & Friends Day on Sunday, April 18 at 4 p.m. Various activities are planned. Information: 919-774-6134.

Purple & Fine Linen Ministry will conduct monthly meetings on the fourth Mondays of each month.
