Golf Bag: Moore Women’s Am Nearing

BY HOWARD WARD: Golf Writer

Anticipation for the Moore County Women’s Amateur Championship is building as it appears there will be a confrontation for the title between two-time champion Patty Moore and Dianne Yelovich, last year’s winner.

Moore, the top-ranked senior woman amateur in the Carolinas, has scored runaway victories in her two appearances in the Moore event, but she had a previous commitment last year when Yelovich made her impressive debut. Both are expected to compete this time when the championship is held at Foxfire Resort June 8-9.

All women residents of Moore or members of a club in the county who have reached their 18th birthdays are eligible. The entry fee is $70 for the 36-hole event and includes carts for both days as well as lunch following the final round on Wednesday.

The field will be flighted by index with eight players per flight. Three prizes are awarded in each flight, as well as to the overall champion. The deadline for entries is May 29.

For information, call Louise Plumb at 245-3256, or Donna Fellows at 673-0089.

Mid-Amateur: John Finster of Wake Forest drove the green on the 320-yard par-5 ninth hole in Sunday’s final round, made eagle to take the lead and went on to win the 11th annual North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship being held at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro.

Finster, 35, trailed Graham Banister of Raleigh by a stroke going into the hole. He shot 69 and finished at 206 for the 54 holes, two shots ahead of Banister. Preston Edmondson took third with 209.

Kelly Miller of Pine Needles in Southern Pines was fourth at 211. He had rounds of 69-70-72. Sherrill Britt of West End had three rounds of 73 for 219, while Ken Eichele and Wynn Solle of Pinehurst were at 220.

Carolinas Pro-Am: Professional Mark Slawter and amateur John Finster of Heritage Golf Club of Wake Forest combined for a better-ball 66 to win the 28th annual Carolinas Pro-Am Championship held at Kannapolis Country Club last week. They had six birdies and no bogeys.

Barry Pierce and Noel Brown of Cedarwood Country Club in Charlotte were second with 67, followed by Tom Ducey and Keith Harris of Old North State in Uwharrie and Vance Heafner and Dean Channell of Prestonwood Country Club in Cary at 68.

Damon Aswad and Wynn Solle of Pinehurst Country Club were tied for 10th with 71, while Waddy Stokes and Nicholas Brown of Forest Creek were at 72.

Wunsch Wins: Chuck Wunsch of Pinehurst shot 75 to win the Championship Flight in the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at the River Course at Keith Hills in Buies Creek Thursday.

Gordon Ross of Southern Pines debuted on the tour by finishing second with 76. Ken Eichele of Pinehurst tied for fourth with 79.

Neal Mitchell of Greensboro won A Flight in a card playoff against Spike Billings of Pinehurst and James Herndon of Hamlet after they had tied at 76. Mike Critzer of Pinehurst shot 78 to tie for fourth.

Lorcan Morris of Laurinburg shot 73 to win the Championship Flight of the Keller Williams Amateur Tour event held on the same course on Saturday. David Chung, a 14-year-old from Fayetteville was second with 74. Bill Ottman of Southern Pines was fifth with 82.

Putter Head’s Info: Putter Head’s, the combination golf pro shop-restaurant in Olmsted Village in Pinehurst is closing, according to owner Sam Bankhead.

“I moved Putter Head’s from the original location on U.S. 1 in Southern Pines in October of 2002,” Bankhead said. “The move took three months and a lot of hard work and a tremendous amount of help from my wife, Pat, Gary Magee and many other great friends. It was my intention to create a special place where Putter Head’s members could come to get help with their golf games, have a cool place to hang out and maybe grab a burger and a cold beer.

“Well, somehow I found myself in the restaurant business: Big mistake, and I take full responsibility. I’m going to close Putter Head’s before the end of the month and intend to reopen in three-to-five months in a new location. All members dues will be moved back to reflect the time we’re closed.

“I’ve created a new design for Putter Head’s that will have 6,000 square feet with 95 percent of the facility focusing on golf, including four indoor training ranges. We’re also going to have a state of the art golf simulator where members can play 25 courses plus Pebble Beach and Pinehurst No. 2, and stage golf tournaments. There will be club repair, club-fitting and golf products that I create. We’re also going to have the “Dog House”, featuring great hot dogs.

“This is a major undertaking, but I truly believe that with more than 800 members, it will be well worth the effort. We’re going to have the coolest country club in Moore County without a golf course.”
