Optimist Baseball Season Gets Under Way

Another Optimist Baseball season began last Saturday with a full slate of games.

In one of the day’s most exciting Minor League contests, Trevor Castello’s bases-loaded triple in the last inning led the Reds to a 4-3 victory over the Braves. Cameron Embler struck out seven in 2 1/3 innings for the winners. For the Braves, Justin Mace was one for two with two RBIs and pitched four innings, striking out five. Marcus Richard had a base hit and stole three bases.

Minor League Results

Cardinals 7, Athletics 3

Weston Phillips pitched four innings to gain credit for the win. Mathew Eddy led the Cards’ attack with a single, double and two RBI. For the A’s, Dane Nelson struck out six batters in three innings allowing two runs. He also had a double and two RBI. Connor Toole came on to pitch in the third with the bases loaded and no outs and struck out the side. He also went two for three with a double and a RBI.

Royals 7, Diamondbacks 4

Bryce Owen picked up the win with four innings of one-hit pitching, while striking out 11 and walking one. Sean Horan had two hits and a walk, including a triple for the Royals.

Yankees 5, Orioles 1

The Yankees got clutch hits from Braydon McDaniel, Justin Allred, Nick Leonard and Morgan Van Camp. Allred gave up just one run in four innings and Van Camp closed out the game with one shutout inning. The Yanks got a solid fielding performance from Troy Carricker. Dawson Fulgham and Aaron Reimer pitched for the O’s, combining for 11 strikeouts. Tre Egerton contributed a double.

Athletics 10, Braves 2

Pitchers Dane Nelson and Conner Toole combined to stop the Braves. Nelson struck out five in three innings, allowing two hits and contributing two hits with his bat, including a double. Toole struck out the side in the third inning on 12 pitches and had a single and a double.

Reds 11, Orioles 3

David Capasso was two for three, including a three-run homer and Daniel Johnson also homered to lead the Reds in a Monday game. Daniel Mallory struck out five in two innings for the winners. Sam Brower led the O’s, going two for three at the plate and scoring twice. He also pitched four innings, striking out seven.

Royals 5, Yankees 1

Bryce Owen recorded three hits, including a triple, and scored three runs for the Royals. He also pitched an inning, striking out three. Jack Johnston contributed two hits, including a double and a walk.

Rookie League

Yankees 15, Diamondbacks 9

In a Saturday opener, the Yankees got home runs from Hunter Belton, Jackson Smith and James Sriraman. Charles Hargrove hit a three-run, inside-the-park homer for the Diamondbacks and Sam Ronalter was outstanding in left field.

Braves 15, Athletics 5

Tristan Helms hit a two-run homer to complement an outstanding defensive effort against the hard-hitting A’s. Cody Artman homered for the A’s and made an unassisted double play. David Boone had a single and a RBI for the A’s.

Cardinals 9, Orioles 7

Austin Embler was three for three and Mike Guevara was two for two to lead the Cards. Jacob Hostetler contributed a two-run double. For the O’s, Mitchell Casey had a two-run double and Aaron Thomas was two for three.

Athletics 15, Reds 8

Jackson Maples was two for two with a homer and scored twice for the Reds in a Tuesday game. Sam Lewis and Austin Cameron also scored twice for the Reds.

Braves 18, Cardinals 6

Tristan Helms homered and Hunter Phillips was three for three with three runs scored for the Braves. Nick Faulkner and Brianna Embler each went two for two for the Cards.

Orioles 13, Diamondbacks 12

Austin Scarboro played a strong game at first base making several outstanding grabs to help the Diamondback cause. Tripp Hodges led the D-backs offense with two doubles and three RBI.

Major League

Orioles 2, Reds 1

Dylan Maples, Nathan Black and Ben Williams combined to hold the Reds to two hits. Justin Thomas and Justin Wilson provided key hits for the winners. Joseph Herbert threw three hitless innings and Garrett Gollehon reached base three times for the Reds in the Saturday opener.

Diamondbacks 7, Cardinals 1

Joey Vecchione picked up the win with six strong innings including 10 strikeouts. Tyler Clark, Bryce Beasley, Ethan McNeil and Vecchione lead the offense with two hits apiece.

Athletics 6, Yankees 1

Cole Henry backed the one-hit in four innings pitching by Matt Forbis with a two-run homer. Forbis and Bailey Rush doubled for the A’s. Trent Fredricks was two for three with a double and a RBI for the Yankees. Trent Allard struck out five in a two-inning relief stint for the Yanks.

Diamondbacks 7, Royals 6

Patrick Moore went two for two and scored twice in a Monday contest and Joey Vecchione was three for three, including the game-winning hit in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Clark picked up the win for the Diamondbacks. Austin Halstead had a double and two RBI for the Royals.

Reds 10, Yankees 3

Catcher Scott Tetlow had a double and threw out two would-be base stealers in the Reds win. Dylan Hasson contributed a double and Dana Parzialle was the winning pitcher. For the Yankees, Sam Cole was two for two with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Trevor Spurgeon pitched two innings in relief with four strikeouts.

Orioles 10, Braves 2

Nathan Black pitched three scoreless innings to receive credit for the win and Ben Willams led the O’s attack with two hits in three trips, including a home run.

Athletics 8, Cardinals 2

Bailey Rush picked up the win with four innings of one-hit ball. Ethan Kavanaugh finished up, allowing one hit. Matt Forbis contributed a double and Blake Trail had a triple for the A’s.
