Belle Meade Forms Red Hat Chapter

By Jennifer Bunting: Special to The Pilot

The first official meeting of the Belle Meade Chapter of the Red Hat Society was held March 25 at Belle Meade Retirement Resort. Barbara Grant, Belle Meade resident and founder of the new chapter, welcomed approximately 20 interested residents with a luncheon prepared by Belle Meade’s Dietary Services. In addition to presenting the group’s charter, Grant also explained the society’s mission to the newly established chapter.

“The only rule is that there are no rules,” said Grant as she signed new members up. “Do what you want, as long as its fun.”

An international organization, the Red Hat Society was inspired by the poem “Warning” by Jenny Joseph and began as a group for women over the age of 50 who enjoy dressing in red hats and purple ensembles. As Grant, also known as Queen Mum, the society’s affectionate term for the founder of a chapter, explains, there are no rules for a chapter’s organization. The wishes of members influence the way a chapter structures itself and positions, such as secretary and treasurer, are self-appointed.

The Red Hat Society limits its membership to women who are 50 years of age or older however, it welcomes junior members to join the Pink Hatters. As a ‘younger sister’ to the Red Hat Society, members of the Pink Hatters wear pink hats and lavender attire. Upon their 50th birthday, members are inducted into the Red Hat Society with a “Reduation” ceremony. Although the Belle Meade Chapter currently does not have any Pink Hatters, Grant says they welcome their younger sisters.

St. Joseph of the Pines Health System includes Belle Meade Retirement Resort, The Villas Retirement Living, The Coventry, The Health Center, and Providence Place.
