Union Pines Strikes Gold At Science Olympiad

Eight intrepid scholars from Union Pines High School tested their mettle at the Regional Science Olympiad Competition held at Fayetteville Technical Community College, Saturday, March 6.

The UP team competed in 20 different events related to biology, chemistry, physics, earth science and engineering. The team came home with a total of eleven medals in six different events.

Senior Adam Bowers and Junior Ricky Locklear took the gold in “Storm the Castle.” Sophomore Scott Schwartz took home a silver medal in “Science Clue.” Freshmen Emily Leonard and Ashley Trudeau took the silver medal in “Disease Detectives” and the copper medal in astronomy. Juniors Patrick Thomas and Adam Bowers won the bronze medal in “Physics Lab.” Scott Schwartz and Ashley Trudeau followed with a copper medal in “Dynamic Planet.”

Junior Mitchell Arnold and sophomore George Simoni also made a good showing in “Chemistry Lab,” “Forestry” and “Tower Building.”

“I am so proud of all my team members,” says Coach Terrie McCrimmon, physics teacher at Union Pines High School. “They worked very hard and spent a lot of time preparing for the competition.”

She also commented on the support provided by all the UP science teachers.

“We have a great faculty and they don’t mind going the extra mile to help our students,” said McCrimmon. “I’m looking forward to next year. Our team has been small over the last few years, but I feel we are moving toward participating in the State Science Olympiad Competition.”
