Local Tennis Players Earn Honors at Methodist

A local tennis product and a newcomer to the area are making quite a mark at Methodist College when it comes to weekly honors.

Keith Criscoe of Southern Pines, who won an individual state championship while playing for Union Pines High School, was honored by the USA South Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men’s tennis.

Criscoe, a junior, had some dominating performances last week.

He went 3-0 at No. 2 singles, won each match in straight sets and lost only two games combined in the three matches. In addition, he and his brother Kevin, also a Union Pines grad, teamed to go 3-0 at No. 1 doubles with victories over St. Andrews, Christopher Newport and Shenandoah.

For the season, Criscoe is 7-2 in singles and 8-2 in doubles with his brother Kevin. In addition, the Criscoe brothers are ranked 16th in the ITA Atlantic South Region.

The Criscoes are the sons of Vicki Greene of Southern Pines and Mike Criscoe of Biscoe.

For the second consecutive week, Julie Angrick was selected as the conference’s Rookie of the Week for women’s tennis.

Angrick and her family moved to Pinehurst in July after she graduated from a high school in Sedona, Ariz.

Angrick, a freshman, went 1-1 in both singles and doubles play for the week. She defeated Aimee Ruder from Shenandoah on Sunday 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. In addition, she teamed with Courtney Bull to defeat Shenandoah’s Lyddall Bugg and Courtnie Rutherford 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

For the season, Angrick is 5-4 overall in singles playing at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. In doubles, she has a 7-2 record, including 6-1 when teaming with Bull.

Angrick parents, Alan and Ruthann Angrick, moved to the area so they would be able to follow their daughter’s tennis career at the Fayetteville school.
