Gaylene Lee, animal center manager, said this is an effort to place pets into more homes in Moore County.
The new hours for animal adoptions are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Lee said the hours for receiving pets at the center have also been extended. The new hours are Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The center, an arm of the Moore County Health Department, is on U.S. 15-501 in the Hillcrest community at Carthage, near the intersection with N.C. 22. The center is behind the Moore County Department of Public Works (formerly public utilities) on U.S. 15-501.
“The pets at the center also need you,” Lee said. “We have a brand new volunteer program and a new coordinator, Liz Garner.”
Interested people should call Garner at the center for information on the following programs offered by the county animal center:
Off-site adoption program, volunteers needed for three to four hours every other Saturday to transport and show pets at various locations in the county.
Dog and cat socialization program, a few hours a week spent playing, walking and socializing with shelter pets, a practice that makes them more adoptable and contributes to their overall health and well-being. (Lee says it is “the pets’ favorite program”).
Foster program. This usually involves a long-term commitment to mothers and their offspring or pets needing special care. This program obligates the volunteer for at least six to eight weeks.
Lee said the center also has a wish list for extras needed by pets, such as toys, bedding and sometimes even medications.
The telephone number at the center is 947-2858.
Lee reminds animal lovers that the center is operated and funded by Moore County and is not to be confused with private nonprofits that likewise offer services to pets.
