Are We Really an Accomplice in the War Against Saddam?

BY EUGENE S. BIERER: Special to The Pilot

This is in response to Paul Dunn’s March 38 column, “U.S. Is an Accomplice To Israel in Iraq War.”

Dunn’s column most certainly is a piece of work. He brings to bare his clearly anti-Semitic opinions by using Charles Lindbergh as a stand-in. Poor Charles, a misguided hero who was intellectually wrong at every turn. Can you remember that far back? He claimed Hitler was undefeatable and right, and even had a few aristocratic Brits believing him. Alas, he was wrong, as Dunn most often seems to be. Surely, “Israel First” would have driven Lindberg to despair in those days as it does Dunn today. Sir, you might as well get used to it, because Israel is here to stay.

But hold on there. Dunn has lots of company in blaming the Jews for all the problems facing the world. Good guys like Stalin, Hitler and even little Arafat (a very short list of those available) have made the same claims he does. See where it got them. Dunn, that’s about where it will get you.

I just came back from attending the “War Rally” held this evening, Apr. 2, in the Pinehurst Square. There were, if not thousands, many hundreds of people waving American flags and holding back many a tear as they sang patriotic songs. Our flags were everywhere, brought individually and spontaneously. Prayers for our fighting young men and women were on the lips and in the minds and hearts of those attending. What comments do you think they would have had if Dunn had stood up and told them, “Your sons, daughters, and relatives are fighting this war against the Iraqi regime because the Israelis have led us by the nose into doing their job for them.”?

“Accomplice” is defined as “associate in guilt.” By my thinking, not a very accurate description of what is going on today. Apparently Dunn actually believes we are entering a series of wars to protect Israel. Further then, by definition, we are the guilty ones. Conclusion: Saddam is his poor put-upon hero. He has argued before in The Pilot that U.S. success can easily be reached by creating Israel’s demise. Isn’t that what the Romans did? The fed the slaves to the lions, and see where that got them.

I entered the Navy in 1942 when I was just 16 years old. My mother became a Gold Star Mother when my brother was killed as part of the Army Air Force. I later attended West Point, but little did I realize I was being led by the Jews to fight their war Nothing could be further from the truth. Not so then and not so now. Even at that early age, I knew the good guys from the bad guys and so did the rest of our country. Plain and simple. There is right and there is wrong. At our age, that should be relatively easy to discern, except if you are blinded by hate. Apparently, therein lies Dunn’s problem, and he will take that hate to his grave.

Even if you come from New York, you should be able to sense the difference. Funny, though, in New York, they often vote for the people who fail to stand up, be counted, and fight for what many of us believe is right. Just check out their senators. But according to Dunn, it is Israel that got us to fight this war. By now he should know there really are Americans out there who believe in and love this country and what it stands for and will fight to protect it and help others to achieve the same. We don’t need Israel to tell us what that is, although they may believe in the very same thing.

Dunn, if given the opportunity, might tell you, along with the fringe groups that Jews left the Twin Towers before they were bombed. Also that all the banks and businesses that amount to anything are owned and controlled by Jews.. All standard fare of the haters. Richard Perle probably is Jewish, and according to Dunn, he controlled or at least formulated American policy. Astounding in its simplicity. He further mentions fringe people, many of whom neither you nor I have ever heard of, to support his fabricated ideas.

However, we all know little Israel has fought four wars against multiple Arab countries and won every time. In 1981, they blew Hussein’s nuclear plant to hell and saved the world a lot of trouble. Given a free hand, and not worrying about political correctness, they probably could have given Hussein back to the virgins a long time ago.

Dunn obviously opposes President Bush’s bold move against the everlasting tyrant. His innuendo is Perle erroneously convinced a naive Bush and Rumsfeld that the war would be a cakewalk and once again the Jew would be wrong. Well, Dunn, so far he is close to being right. What war do you know of that went faster and with fewer casualties than this one has so far? Or are you one of those that are hoping we lose and take heavy casualties in the process, just to prove your point? We all know those types are out there, all around the fringes. We see them and hear them every day on TV, and now even read what they write in The Pilot

Frankly, your article and point of view are obscene. Your choice of people and their quotes are like using numbers. They can be manipulated to prove just about anything finite. In this case, you fall far short of success. “Accomplice” means “together in guilt.” Dunn, if you believe that this war is being fought in guilt and we are the guilty ones, then you had better take a step back and rethink. Otherwise you are just a part of the useless fringe.

This is our war, and we bear the responsibility. It is always more difficult to choose the harder right than the easier wrong. That tough choice comes from our White House and no place else. We finally have a president who stands up to his responsibilities and does what needs to be done. No finger in the wind. After the recent past performance in the Oval Office, this president must just take your breath away.

Have faith. Democracy will win out, both here and in The Middle East.
