For eight consecutive days spanning Open week –– Monday, May 28 through Monday, June 4 –– The Pilot will publish a tabloid edition devoted exclusively to the tournament. It will include Open news and feature stories, photographs, player profiles, scores and other highlights.
“We promised the Bell family (the owners of Pine Needles) that we would cover the Women’s Open with the same effort and energy as we did the men’s Open [in Pinehurst] in 1999,” said David Woronoff, publisher of The Pilot. “We intend to deliver on that promise. Our coverage will reflect that the U.S. Woman’s Open is both a great golf tournament and a community event.”
The tabloid will be distributed free of charge all over Moore County. It will be placed in every hotel in the county and many breakfast restaurants, as well as five rack locations throughout the area.
On Monday, Wednesday, Friday and the following Monday, the days The Pilot ordinarily publishes, the tabloid edition will inserted into the newspaper and delivered to all subscribers.
Girl Scouts will distribute the tabloid to Open spectators every afternoon as they walk out of the gate at Pine Needles. The Pilot will make a financial contribution to the Girl Scouts in return for the young ladies’ efforts.
The online edition of The Pilot, at www.thepilot.com, will provide continuous Open coverage.
During the four rounds of Championship play from May 31 to June 3, the scores of the tournament leaders will be updated online at least every half-hour.
