12-Year-Old Qualifies for Women’s Open

She may not be the youngest qualifier ever, but Morgan Pressel certainly raised some eyebrows by qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open.

The 12-year-old earned a spot in the event that begins May 28 at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club by winning a qualifier round Monday at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Pressel, who lives in Boca Raton, Fla., shot a two-under-par 70, including five birdies, to lead the field of 107 players.

She is the youngest player to earn a spot in the national championship field since Beverly Klass qualified in 1967 at the age of 10.

The 5-foot-3 Pressel is a seventh-grader at Omni Middle School.
